Goals

We all know the importance of setting goals. We set goals which in turn trigger new behaviors. Goals align our focus and promote self-mastery. Goals improve our mental health and promote personal and professional success.

I do not want to repeat the standard lines about setting “SMART” goals. Instead, here are tips that have helped me achieve success:

· Start with the end in mind. What is your ultimate goal? Is it to be CEO, own your own company, retire at age forty or be self-employed. Whatever it is, determine the end goal first, then work from there.

· Work your butt off to accomplish your goals. Goals without hard work are nothing but dreams.

· Know the difference between goals and planning. If you want to be the CEO, that is the goal; mapping out your steps to get there is your action plan.

· Do not exceed 3-5 goals; anything more will take your focus away from the most crucial goal.

· Review your goals at the start of the week. Plan your week around accomplishing one task for each of your goals.

· Self-evaluate at the end of each week and then a complete evaluation every three months. Evaluations will allow you to make adjustments.

· Focus your attention on what you can do to make your goals happen.

· Get a goal buddy and meet weekly to discuss your goals and progress. Having a sounding board and trusted support system will help keep you focused and on point.

As you set your goals and work towards accomplishing them, always remember that they are your goals. You cannot count on others to make your dreams and goals come true or to do the work for you. You and only you are responsible for your actions that will make you successful.
