My last blog discussed how you are in control of your career and your destiny. This week I want to discuss deciding. Career success starts with you choosing to be successful. You have to determine if you’re going to be average or if you’re going to be exceptional because unless you decide to be outstanding, you will more than likely not reach your career goals and dreams.
The decision-making process is simple, and all it requires is the first step. You have to decide to be successful. Success does not happen by accident, and no miracle opportunity instantly takes you from your current role to your company’s CEO.
Early in my Boys & Girls Club career, my goals were smaller and never focused on career advancement. I focused on getting salary increases. In 2003, I decided to set a career goal of becoming a CEO of a Boys & Girls Club organization. Ten years later, I achieved my goal. Becoming CEO started with a straightforward decision, my decision to be set a goal for myself and work to achieve it.
Whatever your career goals are, it starts with you deciding to set a goal, choosing to work towards achieving your goal, and deciding to excel every step of the way. Make a decision, and success will follow.
